spells and skills
First topic message reminder :
every class will be able to use magic in some ways...
some use spells
some use skills ( i dont mean skills like strength, intel, speed, etc), skills are like special moves...
some use both
elements is another questions...
of course not every skill/spell will have an element...
but.... actually... everyone will be able to use every element they want
but they need to be reasonable...
also... there are the 4 basic elements: fire, water, earth and wind
advanced elements like: poison, lightning, ice, etc
special elements: light and darkness
i think we better call them attributes... ö-Ö or not?
depending on what class... you will need to choose one (basic) attribute, then through out the game... get a secondary one... (< advanced? >)and eventually a 3rd one
of course need to be reasonable... you cant choose opposing elements
mages are another part...
apprentices will be able to use 1 basic
then depending on what way they choose...
dark mages >> 2nd rank: dark attribute > 3rd rank: second basic(or advanced... dont know yet) > 4th rank: advanced attribute
but they need to be reasonable with them... example: fire, earth and poison along with dark would fit good together
elemental mages >> 2nd rank: add 2 basics > 3rd: add 1 basic and 1 advanced > 4th: all, except dark or light
healers >> same as dark mages except they get the light attribute at 2nd rank

if some one wants to have a mixed char, they will have to sacrifice some attributes
dragon riders will have to choose the attribute of their dragon... and choose their own attribute that fits to the dragons attribute

Instead of healers can we call them white mages (ripping so much off FF but who cares...)?
Also it would be a better idea to rename darkness shadow.
I also have an idea for the names of the three different types of magic that black, white, and elemental mages use, and a background to them... (and don't pester me that I made up the words because they're real... >_>)
Black Mages:
Kuromahou (Black Magic) 暗い
Nobody knows if it's a curse or a blessing to have the talent of using this style of magic. Black Magic can only be used for offensive combat purposes and nothing else. There is never any light in shadow, so why would there be? Of course the user can use black magic for self defense, but that still results in hurting someone else no matter which way you look at it. In pure darkness there is only fear and pain.
White Mages:
Shiromahou (White Magic) ライト
White Magic has always been adored by mostly everyone because it can serve great defensive and healing purpose. Even though White Mages can never use their magic for offensive purposives they are still able to achive great things with it. White Magic can only be used to help and not to hurt, nobody fears it because there is nothing to fear. In pure light there is only joy and hapiness.
Elemental Mages:
Kinkoumahou (Balanced Magic) 明暗月
Balanced Magic has been thought of as the middle road. It's offensive and defensive combat purposes might not be as great as black or white magic, but elemental mages are still able to use their magic for both causes. All elements are different causing all of their magic to be different, because of this most do not fear nor worship the elemental mages. Fire, Water, Wind, Earth... they're all different, with different purposes.
All of the Magic will still keep the same format though:
Name: (...)
Attribute: (Element)
Class: (Black Mage, etc.)
Description: (What effect the spell will have)
Appearence: (What it looks like)
Uses per day: (Depends on the strength of the spell)
Rank: (1-99, 1 being weakest and 99 being strongest)

shadow/darkness... never had it be the finished word...
though i thought... that a shadow is created by light... when it doesnt fell on the ground where the shadow is... while darkness.. is just as it is...

Let's not use specific chants o.O Let's say we need Verbal and Somatic components as well as certain mundane items, like eye of newt that magically disappear as you cast a spell =D It pretty much balances the mage/fighter thing. A fighter without a weapon is weak and a mage with components is weak =]

Thanks for the complements ^^, sure now I see how shadow and dark are different.
And yeah, let's forget about chants... but a mage will also have a weapon to help him/her cast their magic.
Also should some spells have charge time?
Like a high level spell to take 1 turn to charge and then to fire it.

Well, only if someone wants to use a weapon to focus. =o and Yes spell casting time should be required =D Hopefully people would have made alliances by then =D

but casting takes a while
and mostly still requires the caster to spell the spell >> speak it out
chants would be like a pray, calling the spell to happen ( example: oh holy light from the heaven, give me your strength!... [name of the spell])
maybe you all played games with magical chars were they could get made mute/dumb... and hence couldnt use any spells
i think depending on the level of the mage... and the level of the spell... things like cast time required chant, etc would decrease

That's what verbal means Kiri =] Somatic is arm movements or hand movements. A vital part of being a mage is learning to cast spells without those components. The higher the level the less the mage would have to do to cast spells =D

you need to charge a weapon or body with your energy... depending on the skill you make a move to either release the energy out of your weapon or hit with your weapon being full of energy giving the hit more power
depending on how much you charge.. the power on the hit varies...

I have some questions... Can a mage use weapon or hand-to-hand combat techniques, and can other classes use magic attacks or only skills?
I also suggest that we use my magic attack chart for other classes' special attacks, so when two attacks collide it will be easier to see which one wins or does more damage.

well... yes they can...
toher classes might have spells too..
but rather not... and mostly weaker... depending on the class...
and mages will have their magical artifact (staff, scepter, etc) as weapon... and if needed can fight with them... or without... of course not that good

only the extend varies...

If anything rogues would be able to use mage like spells and warriors would be able to use buff spells. I'm thinking that wands will have spells in them and certain classes can use them.

Abilities inside weapons is a great idea, so once they obtain the weapon they can use it's special attack. ^^
We're going to need to add money though. o-o

and how would those spells enclosed in weapons count?
do they add to the max amount of spells/skills? or just take away slots?
